F1: Groundbreaking Starts On Austin Site

Work has officially commenced on the site of the United States Grand Prix coming to Austin, Texas, in 2012!

Work is finally under way at the site of the US GP in Austin.

Promoter Tavo Hellmund told everyone some months ago that work would have to begin in December in order to be ready for the first race, which is expected to be scheduled for June 2012.

And indeed the Austin team has met that schedule, albeit only just, as groundbreaking commenced yesterday. Clearly there is still a long way to go, but at least the weather should be more favorable than it is elsewhere in the country at the moment.

One last quickie to say goodbye 2010 – hello 2011

April 1st, 2010 marked the start of TexasMotorEvents.com.  What originally started as a site with just a few event promotions turned into so much more.  TME brought many events to the attention of automotive enthusiasts who had not known of a specific event before.  TME brought together automotive enthusiasts, businesses, and event organizers in such a positive manner that it stuck and turned into friendships and partnerships, all within less than a year.

With said friendships and partnerships comes more work, per say.  2011 is going to be a HUGE year for TME and you will see a great change in the site and the way things are done.  With our partnership with TO BE ANNOUNCED JANUARY 1ST and a growing list of additional partners, we will be able to bring you exclusive coverage from events like TO BE ANNOUNCED JANUARY 1St.  But it is not just the exclusive coverage that is exciting, but the coverage of many events altogether that is exciting.  From F1 to NASCAR, to genre specific shows to casual meets, we will be there.  We will be providing to you exclusive footage of rare vehicles on the streets, and at the track.  From insane shop vehicles to unique vehicles built and owned by automotive enthusiasts like yourself, we will have it. For example, when is the last time you saw a 1000HP SURPRISE!!! go heads up against a factory SURPRISE!!! ???? Or how about a kit SURPRISE!!! give a SURPRISE!!! run for its money?  ( what, you think we are going to spill out all of the juice on the first day????? ) We wont just have still photo coverage, but we will have actual video so you will feel like you are there. Hell, we are even going to have live streaming coverage on the site, yes, that is right. Live streaming. Not HTTP streaming video – live video from camera to your screen.

We are excited for what we have in store for 2011, and we hope you are anticipating it as well. Because without you, there is no TME, and you have helped make TME what it is today and what it will be in the future. So with that, goodbye 2010 and hello 2011! Happy New Year to you all!

Regards,
TME

Horsepower by Land and Sea

Strand Craft 122′ SuperSport, with a super-car.

Strand Craft’s previous launches include the 40′ “Prima Donna”, another retro ride paying homage to the art deco era that went from the drawing board to drawing draft when it splashed late last year. Now, designer Eduard Gray in conjunction with cool boat builder Kurt Strand, have embarked on a larger-than-life concept that brings together the best of both worlds… on land & sea. Strand craft has taken the not particularly practical, statement making style of the express cruiser and converted it to the world’s fastest garage with a one-off, Veyron vetoing supercar that looks like the alien offspring of its mothership.

At 122′ feet, the proportions of this dock candy dwarf its Cigarette siblings, but that’s where the go-fast bravado stops. With high gloss mahogany inlays on the fore deck and all-glass atrium covering the cockpit, the Strand Craft 122′ Express offers a true Open experience with all the comforts of being fully enclosed. Powered by twin 9000hp MTU diesels, it has an estimated cruise of 40 knots and punches out at 55 knots.

The most stunning feature of the SC122 is a specially handcrafted supercar (or tender, in this case). It is a completely one-off design closely resembling the genetic form and fashion of the mothership. Slightly retro with a swoopy silhouette much like momma, it will be handcrafted in Italy.

A hydraulic garage door raises upwards and deploys a retractable passarelle to become a dockside driveway. The passarelle will be hinged, allowing up to 2-meters of travel for low tides. There are two sets of stairs leading from bridge deck to the swim platform, which can be lowered for swimming and launching of the 272 hp HSR-Benelli rib tender.

A closer look at the SC122′s supercar reveals a rear mounted, 880hp twin-turbo V12 engine with an estimated 375 kmh top speed. Built from carbon fiber and weighing in at just 2600 lbs., it has a projected 0-60 mph time of 3.2 seconds, but a head-snapping WTH time measuring in the milliseconds.

Featuring an all-glass cockpit, at the helm and up above, it will have 3 digital displays for systems monitoring, plus a thermal vision camera for night ops. The stats call for radar and sat domes to deploy from the roof, but this is one of those ‘believe it when you see it’ things. Overall, the bridge deck is a very clean, minimalistic approach to Med life. There are three large sofas to seat 15 players, while aft is a large sun bed for 4 faux-femmes.

But wait, there is more – and it keeps getting better.

The resplendent salon is entered via individual sweeping staircases to port and starboard. Here, you feel is if you have entered the Waldorf Astoria in the 1920′s. Aft of the stairway is a galley with a cozy bar. To starboard is a club dining area. The entire salon can be transformed to a luxury disco with a sophisticated surround sound system from Bang & Olufsen.

Forward, there are 4 double cabins, each with stunning seaviews from elliptical bullet-proof windows that stretch halfway across the hull. At the forepeak are two crew cabins. Greek marble is used throughout the boat with Hexacon lightweight paneling to offset the increased weight of high-end fixtures.

Specifications:

Length: 38m
Beam: 7,5m
Draft: 1,4 m
Weight: 120 tons
Fuel: 20,000 liters
Water: 3,000 liters
Engines: 2 x MTU 16V4000 4610Hp
Drives: 2 x Rolls-Royce KaMeWa 71S3
Optional: Booster 5100Hp Vericor TF 50 / Rolls-Royce KaMeWa waterjet
Speed: 43knots / 55 knots with boost

In summary, if God had a yacht and a super-car this would be it.

Ferrari 166 MM Barchetta Featured at RM Auctions Arizona 2011

RM Auctions announced the consignment of a 1949 Ferrari 166 MM Touring Barchetta, chassis number 0024 M, to its Automobiles of Arizona 2011 auction, to be held January 20 – 21 in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Originally commissioned for the 1949 Paris Motor Show, for which it was painted in the Argentinean racing colors of yellow and blue, 0024 M is considered one of the rarest and most historic early Ferraris, having been owned and raced by many notable individuals in the Ferrari world. The 10th of just 25 examples featuring striking “Barchetta” coackwork from Carrozzeria Touring of Milan, it made its racing debut at the 1950 Mar del Plata in Argentina, finishing an impressive first overall (pictured left). It was also raced in period in the 1951 Mille Miglia, where it was driven by well-known female driver Aprile Palmer, who purchased the car shortly afterwards.

The subject of a complete and total restoration, 0024 M is today finished in red and fitted with its original components, including chassis, numbers-matching engine, gearbox and differential. As an original entrant in the famed Mille Miglia it is eligible for nearly any event open to historic Ferraris. (Estimate Available Upon Request).

“Over the years RM has earned the privilege of offering more important and historic Ferraris than any other auction house. We are thrilled to present another great series of Ferraris at our Arizona sale in January, including the rare 166MM, s/n 0024 M, arguably one of the most meticulously documented Ferraris we have ever had the pleasure of offering,” says Rob Myers, Chairman and Founder RM Auctions.
